German Steel Award 2016

Enlargement of the central refectory of the University in Kassel

The jury of the German Steel Design Award 2016 handed out ten awards for different construction tasks.

One of these awards was given to the enlargement of the central refectory of the University in Kassel.

Laudation
The enlargement of the central refectory of the University Kassel was solved by an outstanding design concept. The extension had to be accomplished during running operation. The refectory is supported and framed by two storey-high steel truss girders. The refectory gets an identity of grace by this powerful, steel and also easily floating expression. The steel framework also dominates the inside of the refectory. Because of the unequal brace position any type of decoration is redundant. The clearness of the hall convinces as well as the stringent implementation of the design idea in every detail.
