German Bridge Construction Award 2016 for the Kochertal Viaduct

The Kocher Viaduct as part of highway A6 near Geislingen, Germany, has been awarded with the German Bridge Construction Award 2016 in the category “Road and Rail Bridges”.

The Kocher Viaduct with its maximum height of 185 m above the valley is the highest viaduct in Germany. Due to increasing traffic loads, the viaduct had to be rehabilitated.

Statement of the Jury:

“The rehabilitation and strengthening of this icon of German art of engineering is the best example how the lifetime of existing structures can be sustainable extended by innovative and creative engineering. The successful rehabilitation not only removes the signs of 35 years of traffic but improves the structural safety and strength of the bridge beyond the original state.”

The German Bridge Construction Award (GBCA) was jointly launched by the Federal Chamber of Engineers (BingK) and the Association of Consulting Engineers (VBI) in 2006, and very quickly became the most famous engineering award in Germany. A jury of well-known experts in bridge design has nominated 3 bridges in the category “Road and Rail Bridges” and 3 bridges in the category “Foot and Bicycle Bridges”. The prize winners were honored during the award ceremony in Dresden on 14 March 2016.
