The Chamber of Engineers and the Association of Consulting Engineers Award the Fritz-Leonhardt-Award to Dr. Michel Virlogeux

Laureate Dr.Virlogeux,
Prof. Fritz Leonhardt und
Secretary of State f. Trade and Industry Dr. W. Doering
During a ceremonial act in the Stuttgart Conference Centre Killesberg, the Fritz-Leonhardt-Award was awarded for the first time by the Chamber of Engineers of Baden-Wurttemberg on 12 July 1999 in the presence of the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, Dr. Walter Doering.

This award, donated by the Chamber of Engineers and the Association of Consulting Engineers (VBI) and endowed at that time with 35,000 DM owes its name to one of the most famous structural engineers of the world: Fritz Leonhardt, Stuttgart. With this award, an outstanding structural engineer being a representative of the contemporary international engineering arts is to be honoured.
Awarded is the French, Dr.-Ing. Michel Virlogeux from Bonnelles near Paris. With his "Normandy-Bridge", the largest cable-stayed bridge of the world and his courage in the innovative bridge engineering, Dr. Virlogeux matches the criteria of the award.

The "Normandy-Bridge", largest cable-stayed bridge of the world and an outstanding contribution to the engineering arts.

The awards ceremony was held one day after Prof. Fritz Leonhardt's 90th birthday, who participated personally

Fritz Leonhardt, Prof. em. Dr.-Ing. E. h. mult., studied structural engineering from 1927 until 1931 at the University of Stuttgart. He received his doctorate degree in 1938 at the Technical University of Stuttgart.
Further key data of his career are: From 1934 until 1939 he worked as structural engineer in the construction of the motorways of the Third Reich. 1939 Fritz Leonhardt founded his own engineering firm. From 1957 until 1974 he acted as Ordinarius of the Chair of Solid Structures at the University of Stuttgart, from 1966 until 1969 he was rector of the same University.

Outstanding achievements of Fritz Leonhardt are the development of pre-stressed concrete in theory and construction, design and construction of reinforced concrete bridges and steel bridges, hanging bridges and cable-stayed bridge as well as his investigations in the areas of shear, torsion, load transmission and minimisation of crack width of reinforced concrete and reinforced concrete structures. Anyway, his most famous design is the Stuttgart Television Tower, celebrated as a technical sensation in 1954. He designed a building unknown to the world up to this moment: a slender needle of, at this time very modern material, pre-stressed concrete with a multi-storey basket in 150 m height and a huge antenna which reached 211 m over the ground (today 217 m).

Furthermore, Prof. Fritz Leonhardt is author of multiple publications in the field of engineering, an example of the holistic contemplation, planning and construction of engineering structures and laureate of a variety of national and international awards.
