The Chamber of Engineers of Baden-Wurttemberg conjointly with the VBI (Association of Consulting Engineers) granted the Fritz-Leonhardt-Award 2009 on the 100th birthday of Fritz Leonhardt (11th July 2009) to:

William F. Baker

Chicago (USA)

William Frazier Baker, born 9th Octorber 1953 in Fulton (Missouri), studied engineering at the University of Missouri and the University of Illinois.

1981 he joined the renowned architects and engineering firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP in Chicago, where he, too, became partner in 1996. William Baker is famous for his many highrise-projects, among which are the AT & T Corporate Center (Chicago), the Trump International Hotel Tower (Chicago), the Infinity Tower (Dubai) and the Nanjing Greenland Financial Center (Nanjing).

But the most famous building were he was involved with a challaging supporting structure is possibly the "Burj Dubai" (United Arab Emirates). The "Burj Dubai" is with its 818 meters and 206 storeys as well the highest constructed building as well as the hightest building of the world. Due to his remarkable creativity in his works, unifies in his designs form, function and aestetics.

In order to still reach record heigths in towers, Baker developed the system of the "supported core ". In this system, the basis of the supporting structure - as done in the "Burj Dubai" as well - is a hexagonal core with 3 wings forming an Y. This inventive system supports the structures laterally and grants even such slender buildings a high torsion stiffness.

Several trend-setting lectures and contribution on subjects of construction and design made Baker internationally known and respected among the experts.
