New Carola Bridge Dresden - winning design

Today, the expert panel – an international jury of architects, civil engineers, urban planners and conservationists – presented its assessment of the four submitted designs, and has clearly ranked our entry in first place.

Together with Knight Architects, querfeldeins, VIC and VCDB, we have designed a new Carola Bridge that not only restores a transport axis but also creates a vibrant public space around the bridge.

The experts’ assessment of our design is as follows:

“The design by the LAP / Knight Architects consortium fully convinced the expert panel. The planning team has best succeeded in meeting the extensive requirements and restrictions of a replacement structure with a well-designed, slender and transparent bridge construction. The bridge continues the developmental history of both predecessor structures in a highly successful symbiosis. It blends pleasantly and unobtrusively into the urban context of Dresden’s historic old town. At the same time, through the innovative lattice-like arrangement of the arch areas, it succeeds in establishing its own identity as ‘the new Dresden Carolabrücke’. The careful consideration of all types of use and requirements, both on and under the bridge and in the area of the abutments, proves to be particularly important and beneficial.”

From 13 June, members of the public will have their say and can share their views on the draft proposals via the CarolaVOTE portal.
