Competition win: Rudolf-Wissell Bridge Berlin

The Rudolf-Wissel Bridge is the longest road bridge in Berlin with a total length of 1000 meters.

In the beginning of 2017, a 2-step realization competition was initiated for the new construction of the highway bridge, which was constructed in the beginning of the 1960s. Six Teams prequalified in the first place, after the first step, 3 Teams nominated for the shortlist.

The multi-disciplinary competition was judged according to the following criteria:

  • Traffic impact
  • Time
  • Constructive design
  • Production technology
  • Approvability
  • Feasibility
  • Environmental compatibility

Our Team, which consists of traffic, environment and bridge planners could prevail with an innovative master plan. Innovations are: generous contours (disengaging of the directional highway by up to 60 m), a careful adaptation to the flora of the cityscape (under protection of the habitat for man and animal) and a new construction technology, which sets the western directional highway on the existent foundations and uses the old superstructure West for the construction of the new superstructure West and vice versa, the new superstructure for the demolition and deconstruction of the old (old helps new, new helps old).

The interchange Charlottenburg in the North is affected as well. All junctions and overpasses have to be rebuild. In order to do so, we have found a technical innovative solution: the required noise protection wall is directly integrated into the bearing structure, which leads to an architecturally appealing bridge with virtually futuristic features.
