Extension of central canteen at University in Kassel receives a Special Mention of the German Steel Construction Award 2017

The extension of the central canteen at the University in Kassel received a special mention in the category structural engineering.

The award ceremony took place on the 17th January 2017 in the occasion the fairy BAU 2017 in Munich.

The extension of the central canteen excels with a special superstructure, which was aligned on the framework. The solution shows distinctively the function of the building, mounted on just few supports. Due to the scopes, diagonal crossbeams and indented support bases the buildings seems to be vibrant which underlines the impression of a floating building. Yet, engineering performance has to withdraw behind the architect’s design aspiration. Architectural ideas – in the style of the construction of bridges - prevailed convincingly and reaches functionality and timeless aesthetic. Materiality and reluctance of the steel construction create in a particular manner a felicitous and communicative building.
Michael Fischer and Martin Pietro received the Special Mention.
