Bridge across the Tiefenbach Valley: Launching of the Superstructure

In the course of the widening of Highway A61 up to six lanes between the Rheinböllen interchange and the Service & Rest Area Hunsrück the 5th launching step of the new superstructure was carried out on 29 and 30 June 2020.

After completion, the bridge with spans of up to 80 m will cross the Tiefenbach Valley at a height of 90 m. The steel-composite superstructure with a total length of 368 m consists of two closed steel box girders with dimensions of approx. 2,5 x 3,5 m, which will be fixed to the reinforced concrete slab. The reinforced concrete piers with a height up to 85 m are founded on large-diameter bored piles except of the short pier in axis 4 that is designed as hollow pier. The dismantling of the launching nose and the final launch towards the eastern abutment is expected to take 6 weeks. The 18 m wide roadway slab will then be cast by the pilgrim step method using a formwork traveler. Completion of the northern bridge part scheduled for mid 2021. Afterwards, the old bridge will be dismantled and the second, southern bridge be onstructed.
