Start of Construction of the Mainflingen Main Bridge

On Thursday, 02.05.2024, the official start of construction of the Mainflingen Main Bridge was celebrated. Construction of the new 450 metre long bridge will be carried out over the next 7 years by the consortium Adam Hörnig Baugesellschaft mbH & Co. KG and Donges SteelTec GmbH. The main bridge is a three-span steel bridge with composite deck and steel tension ties and a total length of 450 m including the approach bridge.

In 2017, Leonhardt, Andrä und Partner won the design competition together with gmp Architekten von Gerkan, Marg und Partner (Berlin). For the subsequent design phases the project was selected and implemented as a BIM pilot project of Die Autobahn GmbH des Bundes Nordbayern (then still Autobahndirektion Nordbayern). For the first time, the tender was carried out as a model-based functional tender, in which the BIM models were essential components of the tender documents. BIM use cases are also being implemented on a specially developed platform in the execution phase that has now begun. The technical managing director of Autobahn des Bundes GmbH, Dirk Brandenburger, emphasized the importance of the method for future projects and expressly praised the performance and courage of the planning team in paving these new paths.

The first part of the new bridge will be built temporarily next to the old bridge, as the existing structures from 1978 cannot be used for 4+0 traffic during construction due to their poor condition. As soon as the first superstructure is finished, the existing structures will be demolished. The second part can be erected in its final position. After its completion, the first superstructure will be moved to its final position. The construction is estimated to take a total of 7 years and around 192 million euros will be invested.

LAP will remain involved in the project during construction for the detailed design and construction engineering.
