Start of construction for Wolgast bypass with new Peene bridge

On Saturday, August 14, 2021, one of the most important road construction projects in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern started with the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Wolgast bypass. The new bypass shall provide a faster and more efficient road connection from the mainland to the island of Usedom, which is independent of shipping traffic on the river Peene.

The new Wolgast bypass in the course of the federal highway 111 south of the city of Wolgast covers a total distance of 6.3 km including the approximately 1.5 km long steel composite bridge over the Peene river with a main span of 250 m. The bypass also includes various structures in steel and composite, including the replacement of the Ziese bridge and the deconstruction of the existing bridge as well as the erection of a temporary bridge.

Construction of the new Peene Bridge is scheduled to start in the second half of next year, and the entire new road is expected to be completed by mid-2026.

Leonhardt, Andrä und Partner was assigned by DEGES Deutsche Einheit Fernstraßenplanungs- und -bau GmbH with the basic and tender design for the engineering structures.
