Opening of the town hall and castle in Herzogenaurach
In October, the new town hall building in Herzogenaurach was opened and the renovation of the historic castle was completed.
The old town hall from the 1960s was demolished to build the new town hall, as it could not be renovated or extended economically or ecologically. A functional, modern building was erected in its place, taking up the historical lines of the historic city wall and restoring the original north-south axis between the market square and the northern old town. The new building impresses first and foremost with the large number of high-quality exposed concrete surfaces and the open and spacious entrance area. A particular highlight is the new conference hall, which towers above the foyer. By clamping the hall walls - which were designed as wall-like beams - it was possible to create an impressive cantilever that allows the body of the hall to float freely above the heads of the town hall visitors over a length of around 14 meters. The ceiling of the hall was also realized as a flat ceiling in prestressed concrete construction in order to achieve maximum flexibility for use.
The renovation of the castle also faced us with some exciting tasks. In particular, we had to do justice to the historic building and treat the existing structure with respect. Carbon analysis enabled us to date some of the wooden beam ceilings back to 1351. It was also necessary to protect the historic stucco ceilings from the structural measures and to secure them accordingly. Due to moisture damage at the support points of the ceilings, LAP planned and implemented extensive renovations to the beam heads. In the process, a chimney weighing almost 30 tons was discovered, which had to be secured and supported. In order to prevent future water ingress, LAP also planned and supervised the renovation of the roof truss.
