School extension and apartment complex, Köln - Lindenthal

The Chamber of Architects of North-Rhine Westphalia and the North-Rhine Westphalia Federal Ministry honour constructions and facilities, that show creative, ecological and economical excellence, built in North-Rhine Westphalia with this award.

Read below the jury’s statement regarding our project:

The new complex comprises three structures. The four-story building erected alongside Clarenbach-street contains 10 residential units and the music school with teaching and practice rooms. Complementing it on the adjacent Bruckner-street is the single-story central students’ canteen with its striking arch-shaped window facade, reminiscent of a bridge.

The different functions of the building are convincingly revisited by the constructions of the façade. The central foyer belonging to the music school runs lengthwise past the teaching rooms, up to the semi-circular choir room. The practice rooms in the upper floor are developed as a gallery and thus compliment the ground floor optically as well as acoustically. The design of the exterior is harmonious, rectilinear and well-balanced.

The materials used, red brick and concrete, were also used to built the neighbouring “Gottfried Böhm” church, making the complex homogenous, fitting in perfectly with its surroundings. While the new buildings with their simple rectlinearity leave the stage to the sculpturally designed church, they still have a strong presence of their own.

Simple elegance and high quality also dominate the interior design, where stylistic idiom, materiality and illumination have been composed with an equally high level of care and precision.

The jury highlights, that with the realisation of the extension building an exemplary structure, regarding urban development and functionality, with an outstanding overall design quality, was formed.
