Kaiser-Otto and Queen Editha Bridges in Magdeburg opened to traffic
On 21 March 2024 the City of Magdeburg has opened the new Kaiser-Otto and Queen Editha Bridges to traffic.
The opening to traffic was the occasion for a festive inauguration ceremony. In addition to many Magdeburg residents, the Mayor of Magdeburg Simone Borris, the Minister for Infrastructure and Digital Affairs Lydia Hüskens, numerous people involved in planning and construction, the Minister President of Saxony-Anhalt Reiner Haseloff also attended.
All guests were greeted by a medieval court with its minstrels and Emperor Otto, who was accompanied by his wife Adelheid. Both arrived in a carriage in proper style and were thus the first to be officially allowed to use the bridge.
Ms. Borris, Mr. Haseloff and the representative of the construction consortium, Axel Müller, thanked all those involved in the project for their constructive cooperation during the construction of the bridge and associated traffic facilities. In particular, when the thanks went to all those who, day in, day out, in wind and weather, ensured that the formwork, reinforcement, concreting, assembly, welding, coating, sealing, asphalting, paving and laying of cables (the list is not complete here) were carried out, the Magdeburg audience responded with a special round of applause.
After the traditional cutting of the ribbon, which in Magdeburg has the city colors red and green, the Kaiser Otto Bridge was taken possession of by the citizens of Magdeburg.
However, the construction project is not yet complete. The remaining work on / in the superstructure still needs to be completed, e.g. completing the fittings, applying the top coat, installing the inspection trolley, etc. Furthermore, the connections to the secondary road network and the extensive outdoor facilities (recreational areas, steps, seating walls, greenery) must be completed. Everything should be fully completed and ready for public use by the end of 2024.
LAP was responsible for the general planning, preliminary, tender and detailed design as well as for the construction administration and site supervision.
