Bicycle bridge in Tübingen opened
The first bicycle bridge in Tübingen with "underfloor heating" was opened on July 29, 2021
The bridge is part of the new cycling concept of the City of Tübingen, Germany, which shall be expanded over the next few years. Thus, next to the existing Steinlach bridge, a new 46-meter-long bicycle bridge was built, with two bike lanes for bike traffic going into and out of the city. The integral structure consists of a tightly welded hollow steel box girder clamped into the abutments. The steel superstructure was manufactured in Lehe (south of Papenburg) and delivered last November by heavy goods vehicles and lifted into place by a mobile crane.
To prevent black ice from forming on the bridge in winter, the bridge is equipped with surface heating. Lighting is located in the handrails. Seating and plantings will enhance the Wöhrdstrasse side of the bank, and there will also be a viewing platform on the Bismarckstrasse side overlooking the Steinlach River. The arch bridge next to it, built in 1910, will be replaced by a new bridge.
Leonhardt, Andrä und Partner was contracted by the City of Tübingen in joint venture with the traffic planner Klinger und Partner with all design phases and the site supervistion for the two bridges.
