Redevelopment and restructuring of Badisches Landesmuseum Karlsruhe Castle

Karlsruhe Castle was built in 1715 together with the town "Carol's Ruh" by Margrave Karl Wilhelm von Baden-Durchlach. The fan-shaped ground plan of the city starting from the castle has become famous, radiating out from the castle tower in 32 axes intersected by a compass stroke. For almost 200 years, Karlsruhe Castle served as the seat of residence and government. Since 1919, the castle has been the headquarters of the Baden State Museum (BLM). During World War 2, the palace was completely destroyed except for the facades and was rebuilt from 1955.

The main building shows constructional, technical and structural deficits, which are now to be remedied by comprehensive modernization and restructuring. In the process, the new museum concept developed by the BLM, "Turning museum visitors into users!" is to be implemented. The listed palace building will remain in its current cubature and external appearance.

The renovation measures include the structural and fire protection upgrading of the ceilings, structural interventions such as the installation of new passenger and freight elevators, staircases and handicapped-accessible access, the realization of new building services and the installation of a monument-compatible photovoltaic system.
